In this article Kraken Robotics President and CEO Greg Reid discusses the company’s strategic acquisition of the Covelya Group and how the combination expands Kraken’s capabilities across subsea technology, offshore energy, defence, and other marine sectors. Reid explains that Kraken has expanded beyond synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) into subsea batteries, subsea LiDAR, and commercial services, strengthening its ability to provide more complete solutions.
Reid describes the acquisition as highly complementary, bringing Covelya’s expertise in navigation, positioning, communication, and detection together with Kraken’s 3D imaging, power solutions, and commercial services.
Just as importantly, we’re bringing together some of the brightest engineering talent and domain expertise in the subsea sector. That combination of technical depth, global reach, and complementary capabilities positions us to accelerate innovation and deliver greater value to our customers.
The combined portfolio spans the subsea lifecycle, from positioning and communication through to high-resolution imaging, inspection, and analysis.
The article also highlights the growth of SeaPower subsea battery systems, which Reid attributes to a fundamental shift toward unmanned and autonomous systems across both defense and commercial markets.
In today’s operating environment with increasingly contested oceans, there is a growing reliance on uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs). We’re seeing strong adoption as these systems move from trial and evaluation into operational deployment. These systems are being tasked with more complex missions in challenging environments, requiring greater endurance and higher energy density.
Kraken is bringing a new subsea battery manufacturing facility online in Nova Scotia to increase production capacity and support growing demand.
Reid also discusses the dual-use nature of Kraken’s technology, noting that systems developed for defence applications can also support commercial uses such as offshore energy inspection and infrastructure monitoring. The KATFISH USV LARS demonstration provided insights into autonomy, launch and recovery, and operations in harsh environments.
Looking ahead, Kraken will continue investing in advanced sonar, subsea LiDAR, subsea power, and autonomous systems, with the goal of providing high-performance, integrated solutions as subsea operations become increasingly complex.
